VT New Football Coach

I think this is a good move all around. VT has a long-standing football tradition and Franklin is a good coach and has the potential to be a great one though he couldn’t close the deal in the big games at Vandy or Penn State. Good get for the Hokies.

He was 4-21 vs. Top 10 teams at Ped State.

He beat 1 ranked team in 3 yrs coaching at Vanderbilt.

He has earned his nickname: Big Game James!

He's a pretty good recruiter and marketer. So far, no signs that he is a great coach. If he lets others do the actual coaching and just gets better players to come to VT, it could be a good hire.

Franklin is sufficiently competent to coach at the ACC level. Overpaid for his skill level but should generate a bunch of bowl money in the years ahead.

Is this a smart move to try to keep up with the big football schools since VA doesn’t have a big time football school right now? If they get good again maybe it would attract the kids leaving for SEC and Big 10. On the other hand, should that money have been put towards AAU membership? VT is clearly betting that football will be key to their future.

Sorry, but why would kids in the SEC and Big 10 leave their schools to go to VT just for football? And didn't the PSU coach get fired because he wasn't good? Sounds like a risky move to me.

Playing time. Hard to get noticed by NFL scouts if you're sitting more on the bench. SEC schools are great for the first 2-3 slots on the roster. If you're not top-tier, you're not seeing much field time. In the Beamer era, VT had a reputation for building players rather than recruiting #1s and did well in recruiting from Hampton Roads. Fuentes and Pry gave up too much recruiting ground to other schools. Now, it's game time and NIL $ that matter.
