Too many med school discussion recently. Now a similar topic.

This is so dependent on personality and preferences.

My parent advised not going into medicine after practicing their whole career, they really were frustrated by the insurance companies and lack of independence. However, the flexibility to make a lot and not work that much is there. But the stress of making sure no one dies is there.

Law is a grind especially at a firm, lots of client stress. However, if you are a partner and make a lot and like the work, it can be great. You can like it even if you make 60k and work in public interest. It goes down to what you want and knowing yourself. I worked at a firm and decided it was not for me. Law has little job security if in private practice.

My spouse is in business, you don't need an advanced degree and can start making money right away. The sky is the limit especially if you own the company. But there's so little job security, and I find that stressful.

What I like about medicine (after suffering through residency when I truly hated my life)- is the flexibility as a mom. I chose to make less (but still six figures) and work part time so I’m able to essentially be like a stay at home mom some days. I have a good self care routine as a result. I don’t think you can be part time as a lawyer. I also like that I will always have a job. I can throw a stone and I’ll have a job so if anything happens I can easily go back to full time and make even 2x more than I do now. I think law can be a good field too but it’s more susceptible to the economy. I think on net I’d probably recommend medicine to my daughters and really support them through the grueling process. But wouldn’t be mad if they picked law.

I was part-time as a lawyer. Do malpractice insurance costs make it cost-prohibitive to be part-time as a doc? Probably more of a cost concern if you're running your own practice.

It's not like all lawyers could have done either med or law. The STEM aptitude isn't always there.

What specialties would you recommend for your daughters? I have two daughters who would love to go into medicine and be moms, but the specialty I've heard that works great for what you've described - radiology - appears like it may be impacted a lot by AI.
