Foolish? Because out of the literally thousands of colleges they don’t happen to be looking at four schools you personally think are a good value? |
| More impressive is when the student does the hard work of finding safeties, and builds their list from the bottom-up. Finding reaches they like, that's easy. |
Awesome. But it comes up quick. As a parent, begin asking them what they may be interested in majoring if they decide to go to college. Not urgent yet, but start the conversation and begin scheduling college visits in the spring. |
My kid turned down two T-10s for a T15. Fit becomes most important. Yes- Baltimore and Chicago were unappealing |
Foolish because all you added to the thread was “‘My kids (sic) not looking at any of these schools”. Like why do we care? What did fav that add to the thread? Other than waste everyone’s time? |

Mine is trying to decide between (theoretically) playing his sport at a D3 or club at a D1. Right now he thinks bigger = more fun. So we have a very big list, including schools like Middlebury, Vassar, F&M, Dickinson, Connecticut College, Occidental, medium like W&M, WF and Villanova and bigger like UVA, Pitt, Delaware.
We've done a lot of visits but he can't really quite figure out what he truly wants. |
| No, not until spring. Currently with a 2.9 cumulative will be GMU, VCU, CNU, ODU. If GPA goes up UVA Wise. |
+1 These are all on my kid's list as well with VT a strong first choice. |
Any others on your kids list? Mine loves UNC but thats like a .00001% chance. |
| Most VA public kids apply to VA public universities |
Friend's daughter had to make that same decision and opted for club at D1. Had a fun playing her sport with no pressure and had the time to enjoy everything else about her school. |
Definitely visit at least one from List A and one from List B. My kid liked the state schools and didn't end up applying to any urban school. The vibes are so different. A Michigan UVA UNC Penn State B NYU Northeastern Univ of Pitt |
The search should always begin with the deeply scientific practice of vibe evaluation. Students should stand in the quad during a campus tour and try to detect cosmic signals about their destiny while a super enthusiastic guide assures them that everyone finds community there. If nothing in their soul ignites within 45 seconds, the school should be deemed “not a fit,” which immediately takes off the school from further analysis. |
