Thoughts on applying EA vs RD?

Anonymous
It is difficult to read the mind of the college on if they would look negatively at a kid who applied EA vs RD or vice versa. I think the only rational mindset is that EA shows you are interested in them earlier in the year, which could be a positive, and that colleges are looking at all applications during the process. It is hard to assume any games beyond that, unless schools tend to fill up in the EA round, in which case obviously that is the better choice if you are able to do it.

The only "RD" applications DC is submitting are ones that are specified by the school due to their major (some schools don't let these applicants apply EA and they have to apply RD technically but their timeline is also different than the actual RD timelines). Has one ED in, all else are EA's (apart from these "RD" applications).

Showing early interest and organization will not hurt students.

I don't know about an email. But we took my junior for an admissions visit recently, and they were very open about the fact that there simply aren't a lot of spots still available by the time RD comes around.

As many schools are. If a school has EA, you must use it if you want to attend. Between ED and EA, many fill 90%+ of their freshman class, as they should. EA is NOT binding. Apply EA over RD shows you want to attend, and you are organized enough to submit applications by early Nov. What college wouldn't want that over someone who waits until Jan to submit?

Sometimes the college is waiting on for RD the unicorn. Your kid could be the one.
