PERTH, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Australia will offer at least three hours of free solar power every day to households including those without solar panels under an energy-saving programme that is expected to go live in 2026, energy minister Chris Bowen said on Tuesday.
The Solar Sharer programme will begin in the states of New South Wales and South Australia as well as southeast Queensland before it is expanded elsewhere

Australia generates too much electricity during peak times for solar. The huge increase in residential solar installations has created a record drop in demand during peak generation times. They hope this will shift how residential power use during the day.

Unlike here where we have to pay for data centers!

Australian has about the same land mass of America with 10% of the population.

Not gonna happen in the US.

What happened to the idea of American exceptionalism? Why is it that the people who are so quick to talk about how great America is, and how we're the envy of the world, are the same people constantly suggesting we are less capable of the accomplishments of the rest of the world. Universal healthcare; can't have that here. Generous parental leave? Are you crazy? Modern and cheap public transportation!? Impossible! Not allowing 6 year olds to be massacred at school? Un-American!

Why? Why does everything have to be so much shittier here than every other western democracy? We CAN have these things! We just need to bring our rich people to heel.

Empty? Lots of animals call it home. It’s beauty. It’s nature. It’s pure. You see beauty and want to dumb billions of dollars worth of Chinese toxic solar panels on it? What is wrong with you?

I'm pretty sure those places don't get nearly as much sun as Australia. Solar electricity would be much more expensive there. Just calculating daylight hours. Not to mention it actually rains there. But, hey if you're thinking it's just useless land, go for it.

My point exactly

The sun doesn't work like that! They may get more in their summer but less in the winter. It all evens out.

Sorry, I'm trying to understand. Google AI says:
Yes, Australia gets significantly more year-round sun than Minnesota. Much of Australia receives over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, while Minneapolis, Minnesota averages around 2,711 hours annually and experiences a large seasonal variation.

FFS why are we stuck with this idiot's ideas and why don't Republicans display some common sense and speak up?

The mid-terms can't come fast enough.
Solar is more expensive, as seen in the RGGI.
And in Europe, they are backing off their targets as models clash with reality.

The southwest can definitely do this. Large swaths of unusable land around there that gets a ton of sun.

My IL used to live in Perth. The weather is like the southwest of the US. We could do that here, but both the ultra left and right would fight it.

The left - due to environmental impact.
The right - big oil and other greedy corporations.

It's not that we aren't capable. It's due to corporate greed. That's what capitalism and a focus on money gets us.

Yes it doesn't does it. The surface area of the northern area is angled away from the sun so there is less energy hitting per square inch.

Gosh, my gosh greenies appear to be stupid.

They also have a universal healthcare system that is a mix of public and private options.

there are a lot of places that have learned how to implement solar to be friendly to wildlife, grazing and all sorts of secondary uses. Think outside the box like innovators nationwide and worldwide have done.

and I am not even the 'american exceptionalism' poster, but seriously, we are falling so far behind the rest of the world because the GOP is stuck on cars, oil, gas and otherwise 19th century means of production.
