Mother and Child in Stroller Struck by Car

Anonymous
Horribly sad.

My 2 year old, 5 year old and I were almost nailed on Wilson Blvd (whole foods corner) when some idiot tried to go around the car in front of him to make the left hand turn. We had the "WALK" sign. The guy couldn't see us because the car in front of him was big...but WTH is he swerving around the car in front of him anyways?! The following week on corner of Clarendon&Fillmore I was crossing the street by myself (again on "WALK") and some idiot came rushing to make the right hand turn and almost touched me...I literally felt the breeze from the car (and was close enough to kick it!).

People need to get off their phones, their text messaging,,,,and pay attention to the task at hand. It only takes a matter of seconds to change somebody elses life forever.

According to the Post, they now expect the child to survive, which is very good news indeed.

Why assume the pedestrian was at fault? Just this week, I was crossing in a crosswalk with the light, pushing my stroller, 7 months pregnant, when a limousine blew threw a red light on Wisconsin Ave. and sped right in front of me. This was in broad daylight, and neither my stroller nor my belly are small. I couldn't believe it. If I had not been paying attention, we all could have been squished. What a tragic story for this family.

I think one of the reasons this happens is bc cops don't cite tickets when they see this shit. They go about their merry business. We need stronger laws that enforce the rights of pedestrians - like in California.

I've had many close calls as well and I never jaywalk with kids. I'm always crossing legally on crosswalks. People just don't look or they think they can beat you and go in front of you or squeeze behind you.

I hope both the mother and the baby will be ok.

This city and its environs have more than a fair share of self-involved careless assholes, that's for sure.

But every time I drive up Georgia or New Hampshire into Maryland, I wonder how there aren't MORE tragedies. I'm constantly slamming on my brakes for pedestrians attempting to dart across six lanes of high-speed traffic, no where near an intersection.

In some parts of those roads there are not as many intersections so not as many crosswalks. A person who needs to get to a bus stop directly across the street from their apartment could likely have to walk 15 minutes down the road to get to a crosswalk and then 15 minutes back up the road to get to the bus stop.

I hope mother and child are okay.

I live near that intersection and it's horrible to cross as a pedestrian. There are bus stops and stores all around, so you'd think it would be more pedestrian friendly, but it's not at all.

And, yes to the PP, it can take forever to walk up and down to the corner looking for an intersection.

If you live in the area PLEASE send a letter to you Representative to get a traffic study done, more cross walks, speed bumps , what ever is needed.

And also use this as a teaching moment to talk with your children about pedestrian safety. A car always wins when it hits a person or bicycle.

Does this mean she intentionally pushed it, or she wasn't paying attention? Anyone know how the little girl is doing?

The SAME thing happened to me. I still shake in anger when I think about it. There was one left hand turn lane and the guy who could see me with stroller waved us to go-- the piece of shit human being behind him didn't even honk, just veered around so fast thank goodness I was aware or else I would have been hit.

It's too bad if this happened on a green light, because I've almost been hit by so many drivers who simply don't check the crosswalk before making a turn-- luckily I'm paranoid and always assume people don't see us. It's like they won't pay attention until they do kill someone.

It sounds like it wasn't the driver of the SUVs fault, though. She had a green light, so she had the right of way.

I agree that many areas (especiallty in the suburbs) around here are pedestrian unfriendly. BUT - don't be stupid. If you're in such a hurry that you need to cross 6 lanes of traffic w/o the right of way, feel free to risk your own life. I've been known to jaywalk, too. I never, ever do it with my daughter. That's lunacy.

Part of me thinks, if it's true that she didn't have the right of way, that this mother should be prosecuted.

In this country pedestrians always have the right of way and we are supposed to be in control of our vehicles at al times. This isn't true of all countries, Belgium, for example.

I think cell phones, texting, and even blue tooth should be banned because I have seen too many drivers who aren't paying attention to the road and driving is secondary to talking on cell.
