| The idea that AI will lead to a plethora of new jobs is laughable. Knowledge based white collar work is on its way out. The most common jobs for the next generation will be soldier and sex worker. |
The average American thinks so because numerous CEOs are publicly stating this. Are those CEOs not very bright? |
DP. Yes, a lot of CEOs are not very bright, but more importantly, they lie. And their incentives are extremely short-term. |
| Powell is so out of touch. Clearly employers are signaling that they no longer need consumers when the market will continually go up by laying off more and more people. |
I think the "work" you are picturing that everyone did is called subsistence farming. Basically working to live a very poor life while a few people get to work for the local lord of the manor helping fold his clothes and prepare his saddle. Good luck getting MAGA folks out there plowing their backyards and harvesting vegetables. |
What did those same CEOs say and invest in before the financial crisis? Just because CEOs are going around saying something does not mean it’s true. Remember the dot com bubble? |
It is definitely possible. The average American works in some way from the moment they get up until they go to bed. There is a lot of room for improved efficiency. Improving efficiency can allow us to spend the time on other things. This is what happened when the computer went mainstream. What someone used to be able to accomplish in DAYS became possibly in hours due to internet communications. Many of the jobs out there today are possible because of the internet. You simply don’t know that AI won’t create more jobs or create new industries. |
Lucky for you several economic collapses have been directly tied to or followed periods of massive infrastructure growth. |
Good lord!
|
This, our new jobs will be building stuff. |
| I have my eyes on getting our two properties paid off because I want to know that my kids (one college, one HS) will have a place to live that they own free and clear when I'm gone and they can't find work. |
Comes from the same people that claim importing h1bs will create more jobs for US citizens. Absurd H1bs are cheap disposable workers Companies are laying off thousands of US workers and we still let these same Companies hire thousands of H1bs. Absurd |
|
Well no one is having anymore kids, so this should work it self out soon enough.
The current layoffs are all about the current economic environment, of slow growth in everything but mag7 industries, and inflation still crimping budgets. AI is all well and good, but it is not really eliminating people, it needs too much hand holding and edge case management -- it has definitely changed a lot of jobs, but too early for mass layoffs. Some people are probably trying to do with less and augment with LLM, but it will be less effective (and likely more expensive once the AI companies actually start charging for their true costs of services/compute/energy rather than burning VC cash -- OpenAI pays out $2 for every $1 it takes it right now) |
| The resources (power and water) necessary for AI will be its undoing. I guess Trump envisions himself Immortan Joe. Witness me! |
It's just the original web bubble over again. Big tech growth is fueled by hype and speculation. Almost no one talks about AI in terms of its value, not really, not even the big AI shops. Because it is a marketing slogan, a marketing tool, and not a real one currently. Perhaps after a crash people will monetize it in economically beneficial ways, but OpenAI announcing they're going to open up adult content by the end of the year is a tell. You don't gather some of the most intelligent people on the planet to pump out X rated content unless you're out of ideas. |
