What's up with this new craze of becoming life coach?

Anonymous
It’s not new at all. It’s essentially people who want to be in a therapist role without any school, evidence based training, or licensure. The coaching industry is completely unregulated - it always baffled me why people go to life coaches.

Being a life coach is basically being paid to be someone’s friend/sounding board. With ChatGPT why is this even needed anymore?

It always reminds me of Jackie on Roseanne/The Connors, Lanford's leading life coach.

This! There are plenty of bad therapists but they can lose their license for being bad. Coaches are totally unregulated. My latest beef is seeing “Mental Health Coaches” this is so dangerous.
—a licensed therapist who can’t sell “packages” or make false promises

This Is the part that confuses me! Seems like a fake job with no qualifications except ego, so I can imagine why people do it. But why does anyone PAY them? Or do they mostly fail because no one does?

I hate this saying but it's also kind of true wrt life coaching: those who can't, teach

You can get an Ivy life coaching certificate from Harvard, Cornell, and others

It's unemployment. Bad economy.

Why do people get their taxes done at H&R Block? Same thing.

It's what people do when they burn out on corporate jobs.

I know of 3 coaches in my LinkedIn network.

The newest trend is saying you're a "fractional" something. Like a "Fractional CMO". As in, do 1/30th of the work, get 1/30th of the pay.

lol I'm a Fractional CTO (freelance coding).

There are millions upon millions of people out there who have ceded virtually all of their critical thinking and decision making to ChatGPT, which is incapable of actually doing either. It's impossible to overestimate the number of people out there who are so clueless they can barely function on their own.

These are the people spending money on life coaches. They're just the ones that happened to Mr. Magoo themselves into more disposable income than the ChatGPT addicts.

It’s a chance to play therapist without doing any of the hard work required for licensing and/or dealing with patients who have complex issues. Basically, you put in zero efforts and get to only talk to the worried well. No way in hell insurance should pay for that.

Life coaching was even brought up in supreme Court arguments about gay conversion. The argument was so along the lines of government licensed individuals should not be permitted to do it, but that would mean unlicensed unregulated life coaches could

Because they are the friend you’ve always dreamed of and now you can have that for a fee.

That’s easier to explain. You must file your taxes and for some people, the online software is too complex to use on their own.
