I don’t remember the White House burning although I don’t remember a lot of trivia in history. I wonder how U.K. teaches the incredibly massive amount of damage they have done world wide. The colonialism, the slave trade, stealing land especially by their neighbor Ireland. Other countries have done the same but not close to the level that England has done. It’s just a horrible little country. |
| They lost that war. Of course they gloss over the details in school. Those naught colonists. Let’s move into yet another king/queen and how awesome they were. Rule Brittania! |
The US doesn't exactly teach how much damage we've done globally, either. Neither does Japan, and they've done some horrific sh(t in Asia. The Germans are the only ones who teach about their horrific past, and prosecute holocaust deniers. |
I bet Vietnam teaches how they kicked the mighty US's a$$ in their history class. |
Nonsense, you wretched little ingrate. We are the country that invented the steam engine, penicillin, all the things that make life comfortable and worth living. We not only abolished slavery many decades before the US, we went to great expense to use the Royal Navy to stamp out the slave trade. |
but +1

I wonder how this conversation really went down
Brits “oh how awful this lunatic is destroying a National Treasure” OP “yeah? Well you burned it down, so…” Brits “pardon me? We burned it down?!” In the UK, their palaces, castles, grand homes, historic buildings are very highly regarded and protected as belonging to all. It is appalling that this happened. |
| Stupidest thing we ever did was to declare independence from UK. To think we could be enjoying freedom and healthcare and education and elder care, all with the benefits of air conditioning and better plumbing…. |
|
Teacher here and honestly I would doubt the typical American under 30 would know this as well.
History isn’t taught the way it used to be. |

If you know history, you'd know burning the leader's house / palace / castle isn't uncommon. It's par for course. And happend everywhere.
But it does illustrate how little of the current White House is genuinely historic. Between the War of 1812, substantial 19th century interior remodeling under various presidents, the 1948 total and complete gut remodeling, plus many little changes under the various presidents, there's not a whole lot that can be called original. |
| In addition to what everyone else said, they also had their own fires to deal with which were much more culturally significant to them. They might not know the details about the White House burning down, but ask any British second grader about The Great Fire of London and the broader implications it had on 17th century England and they will absolutely school you. |
Probably a long time ago. |

I am a MS Math teacher. The class next door is U.S. History. Whenever I am able to overhear what’s being discussed, which is typically during my planning period, it’s one of three topics… the contributions of women and minorities, and something along the lines of how white people suck. This is truly not an exaggeration. |
Hey, you be nice. If it weren’t for those bloody Brits, we’d all be speaking French and eating croissants right now. …And good cheese…and we’d be eating during our 2 hour lunch breaks…And not be working for the entire month of August. Hmm. Actually, I take that back. Que tes biscuits soient toujours détrempés, roi George! |
