Are there sports at the New School?

Oh good point, I forgot OP said athletic. Yes, but limited and all no-cut, so not particularly competitive. Maybe OP could supplement outside of school if New School was otherwise a good fit. It definitely meets the academic description.

My DD is there, strong athlete, literally said, "I love Madeira so much" last night when we were chatting about school. It's hard, but it's great. Check it out.

I have a senior there. Also an athlete and a happy snail.

Science and athletics for a girl? Potomac is the best in the DMV for that combination. Fantastic science research program and girl’s teams are solid to excellent in soccer, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, cross country.

And softball. Won the ISL several years in a row. Top academic program in Virginia.

Not a particularly progressive education model that provides more freedom to the students, however. Quite a traditional model.

Potomac School is clearly the best private in NoVa.

It is very competitive getting in 9th grade.

Has a strong science program.

If your DD is a recruitable athlete in a least one favored sport, that may help a bit with admissions.

Good luck.

Important to know that only a hand-picked few are allowed to do SERC at Potomac. It has a very small cap on students.

So anyone applying should be comfortable with their non-SERC science offerings when applying.

Potomac has several specialized focus programs including SERC for science/engineering. There non SERC science is also very strong.

Not Basis if she’s just an average student. Sounds like Madeira could be a fit.

PP— sorry I (mis)read the initial post too fast!

Yeah but the Catholics dominate the VISAA tournament in softball. None of the independents come close.

It is hard to get into. Saying it’s the best is a strong statement. Potomac isn’t for everyone. My son got in, but chose a different Virginia school.

Basis takes average students.

You only get the 30-minute drive outside rush hour, but GDS and Burke (for example) have that focus on progressive education/student independence, and also have bus systems (GDS has the larger one) and the metro (Burke is super close). I wouldn't do this for lower school, but when it's high school, I'd totally go further afield for the right fit.

Neither Georgetown Day nor Burke are within 30 minutes of vienna. I wouldn’t even consider those commutes from east McLean. Just trying to get over the American Legion bridge for Burke is a nightmare.

You don’t need the American Legion Bridge. There are a couple other ways to go and sounds like the kid is old enough to get on the subway.

All of the Potomac bridges are a mess. MetroRail takes quite a long time each way to/from Vienna. Short of a helicopter, anything across the Potomac River is not viable from Vienna.

Agreed. Flint Hill, Madeira or Potomac are the best options coming from Vienna.
