Be real-do any of the “better for the environment/sustainable/green” detergents actually work?

Old fashioned soap flakes do a pretty good job, but you have to dissolve in a cup of hot water first if you are doing a cold water wash.
Whatever I use, I generally pretreat stains - wet the stain and rub with a bar of soap if it's just a little oil stain, use and OxiClean soak or Spray n Wash if it's something worse.

I think they all pretty much work great but you have to add a booster. I add baking soda + citric acid to them
