Landon school?

Landon parent here. Our public elementary school was way "whiter" than Landon.

That being said, my son has some good friends and loves being a Landon Bear generally. The best part of the school he says are the faculty. He has really close relationships with a number of his teachers. He is looking for the opportunity to have those kinds of relationships with professors in college.

What he doesn't like? It is cliquey. I totally agree with the poster who said it depends on your kid.

Are the issues w unkind boys more in the high schools or is it in lower grades, too?

I think it's hard if your son didn't grow up in Bethesda or surrounding communities. They're a tight-knit group.

Totally agree. It seems like a community school for those who live in Bethesda. The kids may live very close to one another, have played sports together before going to Landon, have siblings at other lower schools, attended preschool together, etc.

Your husband must not have been on campus very long before making his silly comment, or maybe the baseball game was at the Heights and he had the two schools confused?

I had a son at Landon for a couple of years and the racial situation was nuanced, and in my opinion not ideal, but being "too white" was definitely not the problem. there are plenty of Black students on campus.

Except that they pull in kids from far afield to man their sports teams. The locals would get killed in most sports but the imports have really enhanced their football and lax teams.

There are loads of boys from Virginia and DC at Landon. They have buses that go all over the DMV and not just for sports recruits.

Is this true for younger grades? Our impression was that high school pulled from a wider geographic area and younger grades less so. If true, perhaps that explains why some posters have commented on it feeling like an in-group?

Yes, this is true for all grades. The posters making those comments must not have boys at Landon.

DS had a great shadow day when he visited fall of 8th grade year. Prior to then we really weren’t seriously considering Landon because DS was leaning toward a coed school, but we live close and family friend’s son attends so we gave it a look. It ended up being one of the two schools DS was deciding between after acceptances so he did a second shadow. Very different experience—and not in a good way. The second kid could have cared less that he’d been tasked with an admitted student shadow and DS saw a much less welcoming side of Landon. Saw kids being pretty nasty to others in more than a typical boys talking sh#% type of way. Family friends’ son is a great kid and they are having a very good experience so perhaps DS just got unlucky for that follow up visit.

I've known two families that have sent boys to Landon. One had a boy who was an athlete and seemed to enjoy his experience there, the other had a son who was a bit more academic and wound up transferring out because the school culture was not a good match.

There are schools where I could say that is the blackest school I've ever seen. Your point is?

Yes, I know your point. But this anguished fake morality over "diversity" when it's a bunch of rich kids one way or another it's tiresome these days.

Which private school is the blackest you’ve ever seen? Families of color are always looking for schools that have tons of other black families. I’ve never seen it. And no, 4 black kids, 2 Indians, 1 Puerto Rican and 5 Asians in a 9th grade class does not count as mega diverse.
