Well, kids who attend schools with really rigorous standards and take a heavy advance course load, don't have time to add odd jobs on top of extracurriculars. Many earn more in merit scholarships than they could've on minimum hourly wage. Everyone's circumstances and goals are different.

What are you saying? What do these kids do during the summer?

Merit work and heavy course work load will not get them jobs in the real world with ZERO work experience!

If they are heading off to college where Meals are paid and college is paid by you, what do they need the credit card for? Colleges have funding card systems.

My kids have bank accounts with Debit Cards from PT jobs they held and we manage money through that. They also have "authorized user" credit cards for emergencies.

Authorized user on your card and just go with a trusted bank/credit union that you have that's giving a nice bonus/low apr/awesome cash back/ a reward for the referral.

For off-campus purchases? At my DD school the funding system is limited to on campus only :/

Ever heard of summer jobs? All of my kids had them. They also all earned plenty of merit scholarships.

Our college kids have their own checking accounts with debit cards. No credit cards until they have steady incomes.

One with a small limit through the credit union where they have checking/savings/debit card.
