Fair Oaks mall location is gone. I think it moved to Braddock road somewhere. I went in July lines were bad at Westfield which was where I could find an appointment. I needed to change mine to a real ID and it expired in August anyway. Much faster to get the appointment.

OP here. I ended up only waiting about 10 minutes w/o an appointment--not bad at all!

Re: the eye test... I definitely read that first row as if each letter were a question. A? Z? F? I?

I asked if i got them right--she said "perfect" (but it was probably more like "good enough" lol).

DMV's mostly went appointment only during the 2020 lunacy and most haven't gone back to normal "first come first serve".

Hope they never go back to first come first serve madness. I went to MD DMV Monday to get license and new MD tag was it was so easy. 45 min is all it took.

+1 From another Marylander who went this week. Huge improvement.
