Any beaches in Delaware or Jersey good for late December?

Anonymous
There is plenty to do/see/eat in Bethany/Rehoboth/Lewes (and Ocean City) in December. And while you are obviously not going to get in the ocean, I have had days in December where I was walking on the beach in a T-shirt. It doesn't get much colder there than here. The DE/MD beaches have so much going on for the holidays--it's a huge tourism season for them so many businesses stay open. Its really January when things start to close down and re-open in April.

thank you all so much. I will look into all these suggestions. We have limited time and family members won't travel too far so that is why we need Delaware or New Jersey. thanks.

This is the time of year you get a house that's ocean front so you can LOOK at the ocean while being indoors. The wind is the main issue. What feels like a welcomed breeze when it's 70+ outside starts to feel pretty uncomfortable below 50 degrees.

No thanks. The wind is horrendous that time of year.

Rehoboth
90% of the restaurants are open.
Can stillWalk along the boardwalk and on the Main Street whete the shops are. Most of the shops will be open in Dec too. They close Jan/Feb.
I mean, if there’s a storm the weather will be crap but other than that it will be fine outside and on the beach.

Anyone suggesting that you can comfortably strolled along the NJ or DE beaches in late December are off their rocker. You might have extraordinary luck one afternoon, maybe, but it's highly like the beaches will be freezing cold, windswept and miserable.

Weather is not "similar to the DC area" a long the beach in late December. That's because there's the giant body of water called the Atlantic Ocean and nothing blocking the wind along it but hitting the beaches.

Um, we’ve spent many New Year’s in Rehoboth and the weather is rarely that miserable. Plenty of people and places open. You can even—gasp—comfortably stroll outside.

I've spent more time there than you.

We also go to Bethany every December and it's great: no traffic, much cheaper (lots of places have 'night of the week' specials) and most everything is open. Dogs are allowed on the beach, it's often sunny enough to bring a beach chair and read (tho -- it's always been pretty windy). We like just sitting in the sun, even if we're wearing a winter coat while doing so.

Of course you have. That totally explains why multiple people on this thread have said they go to the DE beaches in December and it’s just fine. Cheers!

I would be willing to do this if someone else was paying, but I wouldn't spend any of my own money to just be cold somewhere different.

They're wrong. But OP will discover that soon enough. There's a reason the NJ and DE beaches are empty in December. This isn't rocket science.

NP here. I can't speak for NJ beaches as I haven't been to one in many years but I go to Bethany and Rehoboth quite often in the winter (my parents and in-laws both live there) and I can assure you that they are not empty in December. The beach itself, sure, but the towns have plenty going on. Now, January and February, that's a different story.

No. I lived and worked in Sussex County De.

It can be cold, damp and very windy that time of year. You can also get a lot of snow.

Uh huh. But we're not talking about the towns, we're talking about the beach. She specifically asked about taking walks on the beach. Not likely -- and not for long. And the poster who sits on a beach chair on the DE beaches in the winter and reads a book? They're one in a million.

Y'all are talking like agents who want to rent out your beach house to OP. You're not being straightforward and honest.

Lol, I think OP has gotten the info they were seeking so we can just let PP “win.”

(Feels like it’s the same person who knows exactly how long the drive is from anywhere in the DC area. I’ll raise a glass to PP at one of the not-open bars this winter, surrounded by Trump-loving old white locals. 😉)

NP

To be fair, many on this travel forum are directly or indirectly invested in these particular beaches; they own a home there, or have friends and/or family whose home they frequent.

Still, the feedback is fairly objective. Even the "it's fine" respondents are recommending winter jackets and staying indoors. And let's face it, "it's fine" in the context of everything - from your cooking, your outfit, sexual performance - is the same as saying "it's not good, but I'm being polite".
