How many cans of wet cat food do you feed your cat a day? Thoughts on Sheba brand?

Anonymous
My picky 8 yo likes Friskies wet and Purina One dry , so that’s what the 5 yo eats as well (although he’d probably eat anything I gave him). Cats are notoriously bad at drinking water, so wet food is best whenever possible. It’s also better for weight management (I volunteer at a shelter and a weight management diet typically includes no dry food). My cats get half a can each of wet food in the am and a quarter can each at night. We offer dry sparingly (8 yo is a chonk), so maybe 1/4 cup daily mostly to the younger cat.

Thoughts?

I had a cat 20 years ago that only ate Sheeba. He died at 5 years old of liver disease. I feed. my cats the more expensive stuff ever since. Right now I have a 20 year old cat who is super healthy.

Vet here. Cat with borderline diabetes. He gets 3/4 can Friskies pate twice daily. No shredded food - the gravy is too high in carbs.

Two cats, both 9 years old, both could lose some weight. Each gets a total of about 1/3 c of dry food (divided B/L/D), plus 1/4 can of wet food twice a day (Earthborn or Blue Buffalo). The dry food stays the same, but I mix up flavors with the wet so they don't get too picky. Wet food gets an extra splash of water to help with their liquid intake (two males, so we're always on alert for urinary problems).

From CatFoodAdvisor:

Our Verdict: Recommended with Reservations
Sheba Perfect Portions Pate product range is made of eleven recipes which all receive the Cat Food Advisor average rating, 3 stars.

The range is made from high-quality food sources which are suitable for adult and senior cats. The meat content provides a good source of protein which is almost entirely animal-based.

When I cook chicken or fish I set some aside with no flavor - so mostly that. If I don't have any leftover chicken or fish we feed her blue wilderness.

Anonymous wrote:Kirkland (Costco) pate. It’s actually really healthy stuff. I give two entire cans a day to one cat who is very old and has allergies to many grains and proteins. She eats no hard food, teeth not good. Vet put her on some prescription food that was $150 a month, but this Kirkland Pate actually is better for her.
My other cats eat hard food from Costco, sweet potato and salmon.
I know someone who joined Costco just for the cat food! No lie.

I just moved my cat to the Costco pate, and she loves it. I'm glad to hear it's healthy, too! I am just trying to get her to eat anything at this point because she is so picky.

My cat won’t eat pate

I’m reading the Sheba box. It seems to be mostly protein. Says no grains or preservatives for the ‘roasted chicken’.

My vet says it causes diabetes

Huh. Did you read that pet food review? It said that Sheba was recommended (other than having some preservatives) which the new formula I bought doesn’t seem to.

Ironically, royal canin dry had a lower rating

Cat also doesn't like pate. He eats 1/4 can morning and night of Hill's, tuna, ocean fish, or salmon. Does not like wet chicken. Also has dry food available (and he eats it).

We arrived at 1/4 can after starting with more and seeing it wasted consistently.
