+1. Seems that some members of the council just like to be offended about everything. Boo hoo, so you weren't consulted, who cares.

Not everyone wants to hide and cower in fear.
You think Latinos should hide in the basement for 4 years?

I can’t speak for all Latinos. I don’t claim to speak for anybody, but myself and I know my family shares the same sentiment. We are not afraid and not hiding and we’re not scared. We are citizens. We’re not buying into the fear that so many people want to put into us that we should be hiding in a basement

By canceling the festival, which we go to every year with our friends and family, the message it sent to people is that Latinos are here illegally and all Latinos are scared to go out. It feeds the fear and it is irrational.

But whatever, they are not going to listen to us because we are just Latinos.

I’ve lived in Wheaton. I’m guessing there’s a higher concentration of undocumented Latino immigrants there than in most parts of the county. That’s great that you’re a citizen, but people who aren’t citizens have a lot more to fear than you do.

This festival was was canceled because

1) Elrich didn’t want to attract ICE’s presence

2) He was concerned about public safety if there were clashes between ICE and protesters

that's stupid

You sponsor it then. Of have weekly events for all cultures if we are spending tax dollars.

It contributes to racial silos. Government should be about unity.

OK no more St. Patrick's Day celebrations for you. It's apparently too divisive.

Goodbye to Gaithersburg’s Oktoberfest.

Link to the huge county funded celebration?

I found this one, from 1998. For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 2, 1998

The 22nd Annual Washington Irish Folk Festival will be held at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg on Saturday....

ICE would show up just to make a fiasco of the event.

Anyone is welcome at these types of events. If you attend, you’ll have government supported opportunities to stretch beyond your “silos” and interact with the others who choose to attend.

I agree. He made the right call.

OP, do you not share the concerns about community safety?

Why would legal U.S. citizens of Hispanic descent be in danger? Why have their celebration cancelled without consultation?

Oh that’s right, a white progressive knows what is best for them.

Once again, illegal immigrants get better care than US citizens. Their “fear” should not dictate how the rest of us live our lives.

How does this in any way “dictate” how you live your life? Were you really organizing your life around attending this festival? If not, absolutely nothing about your life will be changing. Interesting how you define “better care”. A festival isn’t happening. Do you want the Elrich to “care” about you by cancelling a festival for you too?

Why? I guess you haven’t been paying attention to who ICE has been arresting— or the recent Supreme Court statement: that a person’s appearance, language, and location are “reasons” that justify arrests. But hey: obviously by your use of “their” you don’t view yourself as Hispanic. Who did you consult with before making your statements? Maybe you’re disappointed that there won’t be a festive to assemble sitting ducks for ICE?

If you are here illegally, I do not care if you are fearful; that's the breaks. ICE is not rounding up citizens as much as you want to instill this panic into society. It is just not happening. I would argue that ICE is in more danger than anyone else since democrats keep trying to kill them.

It is a shame that this festival was cancelled, once again prioritizing the protection of individuals who should not be here over that of MoCo's legal citizens.

Again, host your own festival. I organized and hosted one last week, open to all. So nothing is stopping you.

This is a particularly egregious example. The autistic 5 year old is a US citizen. Yes, it is happening. You just don’t care that it’s happening.

Even if only US citizens showed up at the Hispanic culture festival, ICE would probably be tasked to arrest some to make a point pp.

If you are offended, please go sponsor a Hispanic culture festival in Bethesda or Chevy Chase instead.
