OP acknowledged there are exceptions where T20 schools give merit - and asked specifically for schools ranked lower than 20. Would consider Haverford Holy Cross Colorado college Bucknell Gettysburg schools like that - I would say no to those at a discount vs a Williams level school full pay

No, moron, she did not say that at all. She assumed, wrongly, that there weren’t any top 20 schools other than Washington Lee offering good merit. We’re just telling her that she’s wrong and that she does have other options.

what part of “and I’m sure there are others” didn’t register in your skull? - the problem with some posters is that they look to answer the question they want asked, not the actual question

Don’t you have something else to police? Maybe report on your neighbors?

Not long that long ago grinnel macalaster and Carleton were consider “eh, fine, but not east coast worthy schools” even though their academic programs were on par. I’m guessing those will still give great merit, so I’d look at those. I know of a student at bowdoin who was accepted full ride at st Olaf. Which is another excellent school on the rise. his family is loaded so he went with bowdoin full pay bc of the oceanic ecological programs there. If you can save yourself 400k or even use it to invest in property or the market for your DC, I think that’s a far wiser.

Grinnell gives good merit, Macalaster gives some merit, and Carleton gives no merit (only need-based aid).

Swarthmore is no more grad school heavy than Williams. It is offensive Pomona is even placed next to Amherst or Swarthmore, seeing as it is a wannabe elite with an artificially low acceptance rate and mediocre student quality. Much worse school than Swarthmore, surprised anyone would pay for the scam that is colleges in the dust bowl region of California.

Go take your meds, please. Always a matter of time before the Pomona basher shows up. Not sure what’s taking the Amherst one so long.

If you can afford $90k out of cash flow, you can do that and assist with a down payment down the line out of savings. Let him go where he wants.

Aw someone can't handle the truth that their stupid small school with no alum network isn't loved by everyone. how sad.

OP here - probably landing like this ^ - but it’s not easy - it almost forces us to quantify how much it will take for us to accept an inferior education for our kid lol. Older sibling disagrees and says 100% go WASP we make enough money etc younger sibling will have the WASP diploma for life, and will undoubtedly open more doors. That’s a tough stance to refute

You need to get beyond the top ten LACs or so to get serious merit.

I'd target the LACs ranked (among LACs) 20-40 to get great merit.

Forget the Williams/Swarthmore/Amherst/ Bowdoin/Wellesley/Carleton/Pomona/CMC/Wesleyan/Vassar etc.

Check out Holy Cross they offer some merit aid.

Nice problem to have OP, love your confidence that your student will get into a WASP school. I would have this debate after acceptances and if you can afford it (which it sounds like like you can) ED where your DC really wants to go.

This older Forbes article placed Amherst first and Williams third among colleges worth their price tags:
