Repeating MS Language Class in HS?

Do it! you need a strong foundation. And this board is full of people wantin their kid to stop taking FL before senior year and lamenting that colleges want to see it til senior year. So it's a win-win. The kid gets stronger language skills and you aren't stuck taking a very, very advanced class (like FL-literature) senior year.

My kid took 1-2 in 6th and 7th. They couldbt take 3 in 8th so they’re repeating 2 in 9th. It’s a relatively easy A, it’s building confidence, and we thought it would make the HS transition easier.

The HS teachers basically acknowledge this, and have to spend a ton of time in the first month trying to get kids on the same page and figure out where the gaps are. I think it really sets kids up for failure, because they never learn a lot of really critical grammer and syntax concepts. (Plus they mostly have really horrific accents.)
I'm not sure what the HSs think about this, but I would encourage it. Also because they expect you to take 4 years of language in HS -- if you are already in 3, that puts you through to AP in 11th or 12. If you're a kid that is struggling in a language because you odn't have a good foundation, that is just miserable.

Any idea why the MS language classes tend to be worse than the HS classes?

My kid has 35 kids in his MS language class. He says he never gets a chance to speak Spanish with so many kids in a class.

My kid will have completed Spanish 1,2, and 3 in MS because required by the MS. This is kid’s hardest subject - just has a hard time with languages.

When they go to 9th next year, thinking to have them repeat Spanish 3. So will Spanish 3 show up on the transcript twice? For 8th grade and 9th grades? This puts kid on track to reach AP Spanish Lang in 12th grade.
What do you all think? Anyone go back to Spanish 2 in 9th after doing 1,2,3 in MS?

Agree that textbook would make this class so much more useful! It’s really not a difficult concept. And it’s not like the basics of the language are changing and needs updated textbooks often.

DD repeated Spanish 3 in 9th grade since she struggled in 8th and got a B, but she’s been doing great since then with all high A’s and 5’s on her APs, so it was definitely worth it
