Why am I having vivid and disturbing dreams?

Honestly, if you live in the DC area especially, between ICE raids, Charlie Kirk's assassination, the threat to freedom of speech, and the worsening authoritarianism and economy are enough to cause nightmares. At some point this affects us, even if we try to keep that news at bay.

Excess salt intake? Or dehydration?

If you are behind in sleep- this can happen. I used to have awful dreams after stretches of not very limited sleep due to nights on call- a head rolling down a bus aisle, heads in my shared refrigerator , and worse.

I had a long period like this in my thirties where every dream was like an awful action movie (I hate those) with just endless nonsensical fights and chase scenes, all stitched together with no plot. I remember one where I got mad at my sister and started just beating her up. I did not have any drama with my sister, who lived several states away and I hadn't even seen her for a long time at that point.

Eventually it just went away but it was so exhausting while it happened.

spicy food gives me the worst dreams
but also being over heated, as another PP suggested
and eating / drinking stimulating things too late in the evening

get yourself some peppermint tea bags
have a cool bath
mediate or read something not murderous
go to sleep

Not OP, but tell me more? I'm on Wellbutrin and lately having bonkers dreams. (But there are some other plausible explanations for them here as well.)

This happened to me after I got bitten by a tick. Get tested for that.

My DD has weird, vivid dreams when her allergies are really bad and she has to take a 2nd antihistamine before bed. The transdermal nicotine patch can cause vivid dreams, too.

Same here. I take 1mg now, and it seems to not trigger scary dreams.

My HRT does that.

I feel like it’s worth it for the other benefits.

I can’t take some medications because they make me fight in my sleep.

I’m likely starting perimenopause and this is literally happening to me this week, and I was just figuring out it is likely peri. I keep having really angry, irrational dreams about work (a subject I’ve been pretty emotionally stable about for two decades), yelling at dh or ds (people I never even dream about) and the other day I had a dream where I just remember screaming f you f f f at my loving and kind mom right in her face. It’s really weird and stressful.

Are you carrying around any anger toward a specific person at this time in your life??

Perhaps you are subconsciously and that anger is manifesting itself in your dreams.

This is what happens to me from time to time.
