Agree that there is no reason to need anything beyond this approach. It's not like college recruiting where you're casting a wide net and contact is restricted. But taking the initiative to express interest with schools you're looking at is important. For example, IAAM coaches technically aren't supposed to reach out to students until after they've expressed interest.
