My 1.5 year old dog still chews everything. Any tricks to get her to stop ruining socks, shoes, hats, etc ?

OMFG, crate the dog! This is a vet emergency waiting to happen. Take dog out to do business, actively play with dog, let dog drag leash around house while you supervise, offer snacks/water, put dog back in crate if you're not 100% watching so you can immediately correct any behaviors you don't like, such a chewing. If you catch dog chewing, give your reprimand cue and then immediately redirect to something it's okay to chew.

You need to train your dog. That's all.

We have a 2 yo beagle and even he graduated from 2 levels of training sessions, he still chews everything. He once chewed some bottled waters and the water leaked on floor. He chewed fleece slippers DH left by entrance, also DD’s crocs. We use baby fence & baby gate inside the house so he has no access to things he’s not supposed to reach, except when we can supervise him we open the gate temporarily. However, the baby gate/ fence method may not work if your dog is tall.

Your dog is very much still a puppy.

My 2 year old Aussie is still crated or behind a (very tall) ex pen in a puppy proofed space surrounded by chewies if I’m not actively engaged with him. He hasn’t earned full freedom yet, because he wants to chew everything still. It’s normal, it’s natural, so I manage it with crates and gates.

Former dogs generally got full freedom around 3. Some dogs can earn it sooner (1 female border collie was perfect by 18 months), but puppyhood isn’t “they turn 1 and are all grown up”.

The only reasons this would ever be "very frowned upon" would be people misusing it to cage their animals instead of using it as a proper training tool. There's nothing unkind or unpleasant for the dog about being put in its safe den as described above.

If it's illegal in "certain countries (citation needed), that's probably for the same reason it's illegal to leave your dog tied to a stake outside. It's not being done humanely as a training device, it's being done by lazy af idiots who probably shouldn't own dogs in the first place.
