Personal anecdote: my kids and I could never get into The Wind in the Willows. We've read most of the other suggestions on that thread, but just found it boring. I know in some people's minds that's almost a crime. Have only heard good things about the entire Wild Robot series (all my kids read them to themselves, so I have not). |
I like Wind in the Willows but some chapters are better than others. I personally find the whole Toad plot line a bit annoying but I like the other bits. |
Holes, though some parts are dark |
Armstrong, Journey of a Mouse to the Moon. It has absolutely beautiful artwork while be a super cute story. |

Wind in the Willows is actually a hard read. While a younger child may enjoy it, an older child would get a lot more out of it. It’s a beautiful book and the themes about friendship are complex |

+1 for Little House series, especially Farmer Boy
Series of Unfortunate Events Mysterious Benedict Society |
+1 I have great memories of reading these with my dad as a kid. |
Fair warning. Farmer Boy didn't scare me when I was 6, but it scared my son when he was 7-8. It opens with a teacher brandishing a whip because the teens had beat the previous teacher to death. |
