Do you still have your third grader read out loud to you?

I read WITH her for homework. So we both read the two pages required, then I ask her questions, like "Did Alice enjoy the tea party?"

No.

At this age a better way for a parent to check in on literacy is to read things your kid is writing.

I still do this with my 4th grader, alternating pages. She seems to enjoy it, and occasionally I correct her when there are hard words to be decoded.

Yes, oral reading is a skill that is different from reading silently. Many adults are horrible readers. Schools dont focus on this anymore (no longer having students read aloud from books due to different reading abilities/risk of embarrassment to the child).

My kid reads aloud because I want them to be able.to add proper tone/inflection/cadance and now just have then speak in a boring flat tone that puts people to sleep.

This! I recall having to read aloud in school starting in 4th grade. The teacher would call on a different person every few paragraphs. This also made sure you were following along and paying attention. I remember doing this at least through middle school. For the very few book my middle school is assigned for class, the teacher plays them on audio on the class. They don’t have to read aloud, or read at all.
