Cars idling

Anonymous
I'd actually bothered by the noise of the engine if I had to sit for longer than a minute. If I sit in my car, I want to hear what is happening outside.
Luckily I don't go anywhere that requires me to sit in the car. I wouldn't know how long someone else idles as I keep walking.

I actually started a thread like this over a decade ago. It bothers me but…

It is what it is…

With keyless cars, you can't keep the radio on once the car is off

Not a problem with EVs.

Unless it's absolutely freezing outside or raining, I turn off my car and open the windows. Many other parents are in their cars too and I've noticed that most are running their cars for the whole hour, sometimes more. I could understand if it was really hot or really cold, but the weather doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm genuinely curious why people do this--aren't they wasting fuel?

Related--we are having road work done in our neighborhood and the dump trucks line the streets, idling for hours and hours. A cement mixer idling indefinitely might make sense, but the dump trucks? Unlike the parents idling at sports practice, construction trucks idling are actually disruptive to the neighborhood.

You’re SO much better than they are, OP.

Here’s the pat on the head you crave.

There isn't a single car that requires the engine to be turned on to run the radio

To me, it's not about the fuel but the noise. Running cars are SO loud.

Exactly. They're not only selfish but also pretty dumb if they don't know that.

Are they diesel? That might be your answer.

This. If I don't keep the engine on, it drains the battery if I run the radio.
