I don't know anyone who has moved away from losing their job this year. They may have a spouse who works here or have found another job here. |
I know two families who've moved away due to federal job loss (or contractor working for government), several more vulnerable to move if they don't find something soon. j |
Wow, it’s always funny to see how misinformed people are. |
And it’s only going to become more when we start really getting into the post-recession “baby bust” in the next year or two. But they’ll still be asking for more taxes and more $$$ to educate a stagnant if not falling number of students. |
Seriously, who thinks no one has had to move from all these job losses? Super richie's in their bubble, I guess. |
In Reston this school year we are seeing more immigrants from the middle east and Asia (Syria, Afghanistan, Palestine and Ukraine and Russia), less from Mexico and Central America. |
The school I work at is still very much overcrowded. |
I had three Hispanic students move so far this school year. All 3 moved to other schools in Fairfax County, no one is dumb enough to move to California. |
I'm a MS teacher and I'd love to know...because unfortunately this year we have huge classes of multi-lingual leaners (formerly ELL or ESOL, meaning lower English language skills) mixed in with general education. Meaning that students who need very different kinds of instruction and support are in the same classes with the same teachers, who are expected to clone themselves to be the best teacher for 30 very different kids. I want to help everyone but am unable to help anyone. So if immigration rule changes are a piece of changing that, I guess I have to welcome it to make my day-to-day reality work. |
+1! The cluelessness of people, people who live in the dmv!, is shocking. |
MS ESOL teacher here—our numbers for newcomers are drastically lower this year compared with previous years. I was surprised they didn’t cut a teacher or two. |

Seems like 2 different and both important issues are coming up: number of ESOL/MLL studnents overall (enrollment) and whether they are put in classes able to help them learn/adapt quickly. (And whether the other students in their classes are also getting what they need.) |
DP. I know several more. Also noticed our lawn service suddenly employee different men. Like the ones they replaced, they all appear to be from Central America. But, why the sudden turnover? |
