The Salamadar is extremely dated. And Middleburg is fun for about 1 hour.

If you go on a Friday, the Loudoun Museum will be open. Otherwise head to Morven Park to walk the grounds and tour the mansion, or stay downtown and check out the shops.

The Morven Park Fall Horse Trials are Oct. 8-12. If OP is looking for a serene stroll on the grounds (or even easy access in and out of Leesburg), this will not be the week for it. (But if she wants to wear tweed and country boots and drink cocktails during her walk, it might be right up her alley.)

They also have gardens and walking trails and a bamboo garden. You could go to the State Arboretum on the way.

Or Washington County, MD, has a very nice Fine Arts museum, which you could pair with Antietam. That's a very beautiful area especially if your birthday is when leaves are changing. I'm sure there are good hikes too.

Yes to the MSV and state arboretum!!

I would drive to the Shenandoah the night before and stay at Skyland or Big Meadows. Get up for sunrise, spend the day hiking until 3:00 or so and then head home.

It depends on the day of the week, but GLENSTONE MUSEUM is amazing if it's open on your day. Outstanding art collection, better than most of the museums. Absolutely gorgeous property with intentional nature trails and natural art. Delicious cafe. And the vibes are just so private/exclusive even tho it's FREE! (Just reserve in advance). I've already decided to go there on my bday when kids in school LOL happy birthday!!!
