Homework is outdated. Any elementary school giving more than 15-20 minutes a night (regardless of grade level) is using homework to make up for their own deficiencies. Your kids would be better off spending that time being outside, reading for pleasure, helping around the house, being creative, and spending time with friends and family.

+1 Exactly this. Ironically our neighbor, who is at a "great public school" has 2+ hours. |
2+ hours per night?? What grade are you talking about? |
Can you flesh this out a bit more? |
| Our Lower School generally follows the rule of 10 min. x grade level, so 10 min x 3 for 3rd grade. What your kid is getting seems normal for homework, but the amount of graded work/assessments seems like a lot given that they have only been in school 2 weeks. |
| I have a third grader at a big 3. Expectation is 20 min of reading each night. Homework is assigned on Monday and is due on Friday. Hasn’t gotten any yet but we were told it’s minimal. |
Where did OP say that their religious private was better? It's just as annoying for whiny liberals to project their own insecurities and prejudices onto others. Are you saying all religious academic institutions – categorically – are by definition, vectors of indoctrination??? |

Sounds great, especially if they are happy and engaged, and if the HW is actually graded and returned.
We just started 3rd grade at a Catholic school after coming from a DC charter where the “homework” was collected but never returned. It’s been an adjustment but my child is now visibly motivated to do well because he know’s his teacher will “grade” it. About 25-30 mins, but no stress or complaints. |

3rd grade is when they are finally reading to learn. We had a ramp up in our public as well. I would rather have smaller classes and more effective in class instruction than HW. We had math and reading HW and spelling tests in 3rd in public.
Now in 4th is a lot more math covered and homework as they are going fast in 4/5 math. |
| This sounds like what 3rd grade is supposed to be like. You are lucky. |
| What do they learn about how those land forms got there though. |
I used to buy into that. I do regret it. |
What do you mean? Movement of plates, erosion, ice age, etc. |

This is hilarious OP you put your kid to be in a school to be indoctrinated and you think they are getting a great education..
You need to go back to school |
