Varsity letters for fall sports - rules?

| My kid earned a varsity letter in no cut crew by rowing in a varsity boat their sophomore year. I’m unclear on what qualifies as a varsity boat, but they did not get a letter in the junior 8 boat their freshman year, but did get a letter for the varsity 8 boat their sophomore year |
