Why so much beltway traffic outside of rush hour?

Too many people thinking they should drive everywhere they need to go, too little public transit.

There are cities far more densely populated than DC, with larger overall populations, and less gridlock. The answer is moving people in more efficient ways than cars.

Yes! I moved earlier this month. Traffic was decent then but I guess that's because people were out of town.
Just surprised about the constant traffic on the beltway at any hour of the day.

Welcome to DC. The traffic sucks.

You need to think about getting out of Tyson's if you are in an office park tower. My direct route is 66E. Holiday hell times it's faster to drive on 7.

Not OP but I’ve lived in/around Bethesda my entire life and it’s never been this bad. I used to be able to get to Tysons in like 15 minutes as long as it wasn’t rush hour.

this... even bridge traffic was not as bad as it is now... really, WTH is there always traffic on the bridge, it's the same amount of lanes as the rest of the beltway

A PP said it on the previous page - it’s the effect of construction on the VA side - lanes are getting rearranged, walls are up, the exits keep moving. That bridge always had issues because it’s on an incline and people don’t main their speed consistently.

Traffic is always much lighter in the summer. Sorry.

Tysons area from mid-Nov to early January is completely gridlocked by the way.

This. Picture I-95 running up and down the east coast. How does 95 go through DC? You either take 395/295 through or 495 around.

Only suckers are at work behind a desk — everybody else has figured out how to have complete location freedom.

It’s always like that. Construction and the hot lanes they added. It wasn’t like that before the hot lanes. I live in Va. now but grew up in Md. I try to never take the beltway. I’ll go through town instead.
