Virginia Schools - Legacy? Test Optional?

If a kid has grown up being at those campuses it can shape their dreams for college. It can certainly be mentioned in an essay but not the main focus of course.

In the Family section of the Common App, isn't it a required field to identify which colleges the parents attended?

Maybe I should share with my kid that the night she was conceived in Charlottesville, I walked out onto the Lawn under a full moon and just had a good feeling.

First, there's no way a 1410 is "well above" the average SAT for a student admitted to UVA from any NOVA public high school.

Second, even before legacy was outlawed in VA public colleges it didn't carry a whole lot of weight for in state UVA applicants. It really only mattered for out of state.

Huh?
Not you again.

THe colleges choose exactly what information they import from the common app. Schools that do not consider legacy usually do not import the name of the colleges you attend. It isn’t even included in the document they see. They also don’t see the race designation.

Do you still mention it if it shapes the students personal growth and life experience? Don't mention? avoid it? Is there a strategy or just forget about it.

Both schools are test optional - 1410 you submit SAT to both schools? I guess UVA that is low for submitted but its well above our HS average accepted regular and ED (Student is from NOVA public school)

Thanks - just wondering if people are thinking deeply on this or getting any feedback or advice specific to this year given so much has changed.

You can infer legacy to both. It won't hurt.

However, kid isn't getting accepted to UVA with a 1410 SAT.

1410 is right of both the mean and median if you counted all the kids that got accepted.

UVA sat 25 percentile is 1400. It does appear 1410 crosses the 25% line. Why do you think there is no chance for OP, who is in-state?

Plenty of people go TO. The reported scores are certainly not indicative of the many, many TO applicants.

Except for the 25% of kids with lower scores who do get accepted.

A 1410 can be above average for her high school's admittance--maybe her HS sucks and most kids score lower. Not every HS in NoVa is super high achieving.

1410 is well above the average of admitted UVA students from Virginia, this is true if we knew the TO SAT scores.

My DD is entering her second year at UVA, and she reported her 1390 SAT score. We discussed TO, and ultimately it was her decision. She said UVA would assume the score was lower if she didn’t report, and she wanted to go to school that wanted her. She was at a DMV public.

Thank you. She was also admitted to VT Honors, where she also reported the 1390. OP, best of luck to your DC.
