Please don’t eat farmed salmon |
| Not to derail your post, OP, but my question is ..who has the best wild caught salmon? Is there a way to make wild caught salmon taste better? |
This is my question too. I know wild salmon is so much better for you but I hate the taste. |
| Aldi |
PP - actually, I buy it fresh at Aldi and store it in the freezer. |
| I get the Mowi farmed salmon from Chile from Jeff. It freezes well and is very consistent. https://a.co/d/dRPdPgM |
Cook an entire filet (not portions) on a pellet grill. 350 for 20 minutes. Salmon Seasoning of choice. Most people overcook wild salmon. Farmed salmon is the feedlot ribeye of “seafood.” |
| I now worry about the tape worms but Costco |
|
I grew up in Alaska and spent my high school summers working in canneries, so I'm partial to wild Alaska salmon instead of farmed. I buy from:
Coscto (decent quality, good enough price to eat regularly, limited selection) Cold Country Salmon (really top quality, and I like supporting a small local provider) Great-Alaska-Seafood.com (online source, more reliable wide selection than the other options) Mom's (ours carries the Cold Country stock) For PP who doesn't like wild salmon, try some different varieties. Are you eating sockeye? I love it, but it does have a stronger flavor than the others and can dry out quickly when overcooked. If you want something milder in flavor, try Coho instead. King salmon is of course delicious but $$$, I save that for special occasions vs everyday weeknights. Also try cooking a whole fillet instead of small individual portions, the inside won't dry out as much. |
| Why is farmed salmon bad? |
Salmon get their color from eating krill. Farmed salmon get it from dyes. They’re also pumped up with antibiotics. They tend to raised in pens in the fjords and inlets of Norway, Canada and puget sound. Nets fail and many escape, supposedly theure sterile, but like in Jurassic park “nature will find a way” and then can contaminated the gene pool of wild stock and compete for food with them. Wild runs passing near farm pens also get sea lice from them. |
Here’s a good article https://www.hcn.org/issues/54-7/fish-how-a-salmon-farm-disaster-changed-northwest-aquaculture-forever/ |
| I buy mine from WF. I have gotten it at Costco, but when I looked they had nine that still had skin on. I like to skin, so I stick with WF. Someone may say I am mistaken about Costco— I only looked once. |
I get mine from costco; this bag. It's skin on. |
| The salmon- “fresh” (frozen and thawed) and frozen Atlantic salmon at Whole Foods is bad. For the past year or so, there’s been a weird layer of fat on the skinned side that ruins it for me. I once asked the WF fishmonger and he said it is due to what the salmon are being fed at the farm where WF sources its Atlantic salmon. |
