Quarter system bummer

Something to consider when choosing a quarter system school.

Yeah, it's definitely miserable. I admit we didn't spend a lot time thinking about this. DC was excited for the idea of getting to take extra/shorter classes.

yep. My child is starting at Dartmouth and frankly they/we never gave the late start/late end a second thought but now is realizing that they wouldn't have picked the school for this reason. Too late now but it stinks.

Does Dartmouth still have the required summer at Dartmouth (I think after sophomore year)? That also seemed like a bad idea.

yep. They get a fall or spring 10 week quarter off one year and have to go to school for 10 weeks between sophomore and junior years.

My kid is still home for another week. She can't get into her apartment until September 1. Classes start September 2. Her brother in HS has been back to school for nearly a month.

Anonymous wrote:Yes, it isn’t ideal. Mine is continuing her internship until she leaves (late September!) and will visit friends already in school in NYC. We would also take a family vacation if we didn’t still have a child in high school. Otherwise we are very happy with the decision (UChicago) and how the first year went FWIW.

Mine is also going to Chicago, so happy to hear it's been good for your kid. So much negativity here about the school. Did she get the internship through your personal connections, or school? I have been assuming it's impossible to find something for rising sophs. All we know right now is that DC is in the "North" dorm.

OP this is a nothing burger you are insane

Your kid isn’t going to have the same schedule as everyone else any more grow up

OP: In fact he is! Spending money will def not be an issue. But I'm sure he'd rather be having fun and starting his life.

Mine didn't have the energy to be this bummed. He worked 12 hr days landscaping and then a ton of weekend hours power washing.

It wasn’t a secret.

Wait, at Dartmouth they can’t take the winter trimester off sophomore year? My cousin who is from the south loved not having to go that winter. And Dartmouth is so nice in the summer. She actually wound up doing two summers at Dartmouth and two winters at home.

Of all the things to complain about. Come on, you knew this when applying to these schools.

Did you and your child not understand the schedule when they applied?

Doesn't work for everyone but we enjoyed doing a trip in September with our kid. It can be a great month to travel.

Some people have a hard time reading a calendar.

One of the reasons my kid didn’t choose Northwestern. Not everyone’s cup of tea

My college junior would love to not be starting classes on Monday. 😂
