working/stay-at-home moms

Out of all our friends with kids in the DC area, very few moms we know work full-time, but we know a few with part-time jobs. If you're talking upper middle/wealthy class, then chances are, there's a high earning husband (although the wife can certainly be the high earner). The second spouse needs to also make a lot of money to make working worthwhile financially after taxes and paying a nanny. For me as a lawyer, making a lot of money = working a lot of hours. It's not worth it to me personally to work all the time and never see my kids, plus bring home so little after taxes and nanny, so I joined the ranks of the SAHMs.

Do you mind my asking where you live? I'm currently in G'town, a SAHM, and I would love to find a NW DC neighborhood with lots of other SAHMs. THANKS!

I live in NW DC and know a lot of moms with alternative situations - they work part time from home on a consulting basis, they're writing books, etc. I know only a few pure SAHM now, but that has changed since my child has gotten older. I used to be a SAHM until preschool. If I happen to take a day off during the week, I've noticed that the SAHMs are with the babies. there are barely any preschool aged children around anymore. Worth considering! I think a lot of city SAHMs do it for a short while and then return to work in some form.

I don't know if this is true or not but I find that there are more SAHM in middle class neighborhoods then wealthy. I work fulltime and my husband is home with the kids in Silver Spring and the only reason we can afford it is because we becasue we don't live in a tony neighborhood. And by the way, I define 'middle class' in this area as living in an area where homes are between $450 - $550 which is scary.

No, I'm not taking a survey or writing a book. Maybe I will someday though!
