its wasting trees. Although I like what PP is doing compiling her life story. I don't have the discipline for that. |
I save receipts but never have time to compare. My intent was always to check for fraud.
There was one time when I was defrauded for about $75 at a gas station I didn't use and I didn't notice for about 2 years. But I eventually realized because my husband told me of a similar error he had found and fought on his bill. And when he explained he knew it was wrong because our cars can't hold more than about $60 of gas, a few months later I figured out I had a similar problem when I finally reconciled some stuff. Just this year I was the victim of a massive fraud but I found out right away because I have texts enabled. It started when I found a false $200 Hilton charge on my bill. I disputed that. A replacement credit card was sent and stolen from the USPS system. I have a locked mailbox so I know the card was stolen before I could get it from the mailbox. A thief then charged car repairs in several large transactions and I received a text from Capital One asking about the second. I pressed that I didn't recognize the merchant but that transaction still processed. I have had credit cards for about 35 years. So far I've only been defrauded and not caught it just the one time. So only out $75. I had one incident in the 1990s where somebody stole my card number and rented a Uhaul for about $400. The gas thing around 5 years ago. Then the recent hotel and car repair charges which might have been the same thief. Possibly inside the postal system. None of these incidents have come from physical loss of plates. My husband had his own gas charge issue and then his number was stolen once and used to go shopping locally. No loss to us from that. It was shut off by the bank. So...long story short, saving receipts hasn't helped much or mattered much. Reading statements is still important. I still get paper because it reminds me to check. And...my conclusion is that it's super helpful to get texts for purchases right away. I set $30 as a threshold so I don't get one for small purchases. I'm just keeping an eye out for major fraud. It works well. |
Do you use your debit card? Very dangerous if it’s stolen. Please don’t tell me you use checks. |
I aways take itemized receipts at stores; I’ve caught many mistakes where something on sale isn’t listed in sale. |
That’s so crazy. Why not just set up alerts so he gets a text every time there is a charge? Then no need to review statement |
For business purposes only. |
No. I try to tell them I don't want a receipt before they hand it to me. |
Yes and no. It depends on so many things.
I try to catch mistakes in grocery stores when there. So I check it as I walk out. I take a picture of the signed receipt at restaurants as I want to make sure the tip added later matches my total. I should stop checking gas stations. I never go inside and gas total has never changed on me later. Giant sends my receipt on my e-mail now. Can't stand the CVS receipt. That's also digital now. |
What’s wrong with checks? |
I wouldn’t keep a receipt unless I was trying to prove an alibi.
So if you see me take a receipt when I have the option not to, you can bet someone is doing a crime I’m involved in somewhere else. |
Yes. I want a record of my purchases, and I want to be able to see that I was charged correctly for the items that I paid for. Also, I’m not white. If I buy something from store 1, and it’s in my reusable shopping bag when I go to store 2, I will be able to produce a receipt for that store 1 purchase.

I get receipts. My DH and I share a checking account and I will log that amount when I get home. I am also a big returner, so the paper receipt is easier than locating the emailed receipt. |
This, or if I need the receipt for work or there is something weird about the purchase that I am not sure if I need to return it (3rd option happens rarely). 15:33, you must be a wild and sexy joy to live with. Not only did you live through that boredom the first time and decide you may want to relive it, but then you actually did relive it via receipts, detail it, and post about it to waste the time of others. And yet I kept reading! And reading! Because I find it oddly interesting that you find it interesting. My Qs: #1 do you periodically schedule taking out the receipts to relive 'where you were at' at the time? #2 after reliving and posting... how does it make you feel? What is the emotion? Or does that depend on the memory- are there some receipts with such bad associations that you burn them finally? (serious question/people fascinate me) #3 do you have a plan to ditch all this/dehoard before you die (if you don't have kids you love who are involved/no need to respond as it's someone else's problem in that case) and #3 just a theoretical but what would have to happen for you to try a new method/no longer keep receipts/detail it in this way? |
Why can’t my credit card email me statements as pdf attachments? Why do I have to login to website to see activity or download statement! |
You nuts! |
