Too young to read cursive?

I used to do calligraphy for fun as a kid and I could learn a new font in an afternoon. So I think a motivated kid could learn cursive in a couple days over the summer.

It's just another example of how public education has been dumbed-down for the masses and standards lowered.

Used to be difficult to graduate HS, with many kids never making it past their freshman year. 75+ years ago a HS education was more difficult that having a Masters degree these days.

Idiocracy was not just a movie, but an astute satirical commentary on the world and how it's declining since the 1960s.

No, the posters who are responding either come from different school systems (abroad, etc), or decided to teach cursive to their kids.

Or grew up before the whole "no child left behind, so we must make everything easier so everyone graduates!"

Op here. Very cool to learn about the volunteering opportunities.

I started thinking about this because a ~17yo I know had a hard time reading a thank you note or birthday card (I can’t remember) in cursive. I heard other kids agreeing with her - “yeah, it’s much harder to read for me.”

I figure there may be now university students who are very intelligent, but who can’t read and study historical texts even for advanced college classes.

Thanks everyone!
