I mix it up with the pesto and use different nut and greens combinations:

• walnut, basil, parsley
• pine nuts and arugula
• almonds and spinach

I also don't use garlic in mine because I think it overpowers the other flavors . . . so I just add olive oil, lemon juice, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and sometimes chili flakes.

Who on earth puts nuts in pasta salad??

I think nuts sound great. Crunch and protein. If pine nuts are OK why not other nuts. I would totally put cashews in a peanut noodle salad.
As long as you don't put nuts in my brownies. That's a jailable offense.

Please warn people if you substitute cashews for peanuts in a dish called peanut noodle salad, or you are going to kill someone

Try tortellini, Italian vinaigrette, salt, pepper, Parmesan, chopped Roma tomatoes, black olives.

Or any good pasta, lemon vinaigrette, spinach or cold grilled asparagus , salt, pepper

Or try some of the recipes on the NYT site

You can make pesto with any kind of nut, and all the variations are tasty in a pasta salad. Need to make sure no one is allergic, obviously.

I assume one would be aware of the allergies of household members.

Cheese tortellini, artichokes, diced tomato, spinach, roasted red pepper, basil, shredded parm. Toss with Italian dressing. If you need to extend it for a crowd add half a box of penne.

So many food combos go well in a pasta salad. OP, what veggies and meats does your daughter like? Do you think she’d prefer fresh or cooked ingredients in the salad?

Here’s one I love (cous cous is a pasta, and israeli cous cous has similar chew-factor to orzo or pastina):

Olive oil and balsamic optional.
