Interior Designers who will work by the hour?

I think it’s actually more cost effective to get a total price from the designer than to do hourly.

Maybe ask the designer you like who they recommend for smaller budgets. That’s how I found my interior designer - the firm I liked wouldn’t take me cause my project and budget was too small. But they recommended one of their former associates who had gone out on her own.

Hourly designers will take you to the cleaners. They grossly over charge. Let me give you an example- We were charged $1200 on an invoice for plans we never saw. The designer showed us plans from another home she had done at meeting but never received plans for our home yet she tried to charge us for them. Upon further inspection of our invoice, she was charging us for things we never request or she never did. Things got ugly when we asked for clarification. I highly recommend working with someone that charges a flat fee.

There are phenomenal by hour designers who are also properly trained architects on Instagram — send them photos, floor plan or even a matterport

Georgina Wilson will do a floor plan review and design and layout.

Why get ripped off by someone with an associates degree when you can work with a world renowned architect-trained designer for a fraction of the price?

Hi, international architect lady.

Hi “triangle kitchen” designer

Honestly, nothing against you, but to be a designer you need proper bona fides including materials and math. Architecture degree is one way to ensure that, and coming to design via being a divorcee isn’t

Georgina charges like $2k to do the entire floor plan; then you can buy stuff without an upcharge and with a great discount

Good word, designers want to sell you Visual Comfort China crap when you can get Murano for the price. Not to mention custom Liberty silks. ChatGPT will decimate the “designer” industry

While we are at it de Gournay and Ananbo will lay out your walls, send you photos of the colorways, let you see it in VR and it’s free. Why on gods green earth would you need an intermediary?

I can see maybe getting Holly Hunt but who wants to be a Kardashian? There’s much better stuff.

I’m sorry but it’s just stupid

I feel bad for this architect you’re always promoting if you’re not her because you really are the least persuasive person. If you like her, you should stop mentioning her.

I believe she was used to people that don't look at invoices and just pay without confirming the work done. I agree that going with the design services at furniture stores is the way to go. Crate and barrel will come to you house at no charge.

One person doesn’t equal many.

^for what it's worth, Allied means they have not passed their licensing exam, which is not necessarily a bad sign for residential. But "Professional" means they are licensed.

We wanted a living room refresh and were charged for about 8 hours for a home visit and then links from West Elm/Pottery Barn for rugs, coffee tables and lamps. (She also initially billed us for two extra hours and blamed a math error. )

We did end up buying, and liking, three of her suggested items. But, at almost 2k I didn’t feel like it was worth it and I can’t help but feel “cheated” at how many hours I was billed for.

Eight hours for a room refresh is perfectly reasonable, and I’d argue very little time. Did she even charge you driving time? Do you know how hard it is to find exact dimensions of furniture for your space? If you start with one couch that’s 80” and don’t like it, but the next one is 86” that might throw off your side tables. Also, if you need a 75” couch that works with the design and has the right fabric, that might take looking for awhile. That’s why custom can be easier and often cheaper through a designer.

You can’t get under $1500 for a halfway decent design in a box and that means you need to measure.

You can definitely get that, yes. $2300 for up to 3500 sqft full CAD layout plan with someone who regularly visits top fairs such as the Milan expo and not someone who’ll take you to Chantilly VA and upcharge you

Don’t like architects? Talk to proven talent. Consultation with Nate Berkus is $900

Like it or not C19 has changed the world and AI has supersped the global connectivity and ability to get anything done better cheaper and virtually.

Professional designers don’t need anything more than a 2 year associate degree. Getting a CAD plan out of one is like wringing water out of a stone

If you’re going to spend the money these interior designers are telling you to, at least do yourself a favor and hire someone on the AD100 list (no one on there from DMV).
