Why doesn’t MCPS offer Drivers Ed in high schools?

I graduated from MCPS in 98 and it seemed long gone. My parents took MCPS drivers ed. Seems like a good way to handle it, but maybe MCPS has enough to worry about right now? (Ahem - boundary studies and paying the BCC teacher? Amongst other issues?)

I took driver’s ed during the summer in the mid-70s at B-CC.

I graduated in 1989 but they eliminated it just as I was learning to drive so I had to take it through Potomac Driving School. I’ve always felt it should be offered in school as not all students can afford to take it outside. I didn’t mind paying for my kids to do I Drive Smart but many families don’t have that option.

Mc has a more affordable option.

I used to teach in Jefferson County WV and the HS offered drivers ed through the PE department. Essentially it was used to put athletic coaches in classrooms as full employees rather than stipend employees.

Was it ever offered in MCPS? I graduated here in 2002 and we didn’t have it as an option back then

They used to have it until the 90s

I graduated Wootton in 1989 and I think we still had it then but I would say very few people used it. Most people did Potomac driving School or another one in the area.

I graduated HS in 1980
I took drivers Ed in school
Mandatory swimming
Cooking class
Small Engine repair
Welding
Woodworking,
Metal working class
Blue Print Reading
Automotive Shop Class
SAT Review Class
Typing Class

All in addition my academic classes. I learned to swim, cook a meal, drive a car, weld, fix a car, carpentry etc. all actual useful stuff in HS in addition to academics. During 1980s phased it out.

Today’s kids graduate with zero skills for real world. I could change my Dads Alternator, build a bookcase and make dinner at 16 from what I learned in High School

They don't offer it because they want everyone to take more demanding classes and boost their budget.

You could, but plenty of people took all those same things and learned very little. Everyone took home ex and shop in MS/HS and yet guys still couldn’t make a meal or really see. Same as many women couldn’t repair a car or build a bookcase. It was mostly basic exposure.

Drivers Ed and Typing I’ll give you.

I don’t hear many request for these classes to be brought make as requirements. And there are CTE/Elective classes that can be taken for some of these areas.
