Two Jews (Peter Beinart and Jon Stewart) discuss Israel

Anonymous
Thanks for posting this OP. I usually enjoy — and often learn a lot from — Jon Stewart, even when I disagree with some of the points that he’s made. I hadn’t heard of Peter Beinart before, but their conversation was interesting and thought-provoking. I plan to read at least one of Beinart’s books — and put it at the top of my nonfiction pile.

it was an interesting conversation at a pivotal time. I'm Jewish, very pro-Israel but I hate Netanyahu and what he's done to our Palestinian neighbors. I wish they had talked about how Hamas has still not release 50 remaining hostages (or their bodies): that would end the famine right away. But the Netanyahu government isn't doing anyone any favors right now and needs to change. It makes all of us look bad and endangers all of us as such.

Same. Although I don’t blame anyone for antisemitism except antisemites. “Retaliation” against Jews elsewhere in the world is pure bigotry, same as it ever was.

How are you so certain that releasing the remaining hostages “would end the famine right away?” Isn’t it at least as likely that once the hostages have been released Netanyahu will destroy the remaining Palestinians?

Exactly, that's why Israel has rejected most of the hostage deals and why they don't care if the hostages starve or get killed by indiscriminate bombing. The goal has always been to wipe out Gaza and resettle and the justification for this can only occur so long as there are hostages. Not a very a very complicated or difficult concept to see.

How are you certain that if Israel stops attacking Gaza, Israel will not get attacked again from Gaza. Anyone can construct a scenario to avoid a responsibility. Hence the proverb, "There are lions in the street!" But, if you care about starving children you would accept this risk you constructed and call for the hostages to be released.

Yes it's a concept alright. Concepts are like nostrils we all have them.

Others Jews listen up and learn, right?

I’m not certain of anything. I asked a question— of someone who seemed to be quite certain about their stance.

Yes, and your rhetorical question shows your stance. None of us are new to planet Earth, so we know the purpose of "I am just asking questions" questions.

What about AIPAC?

You brought AIPAC up, so you tell us what you want us to think about it. No one needs to ponder your rhetorical questions as if you are a professor.

Explain your purpose in bringing Aipac up in this thread. This is the Religion forum- not politics.

The goal for Netanyahu is just to stay in power (and out of jail). The goal for the insane apocalyptic racists who make up his government is to wipe out Gaza and annex the land for Israel to resume illegal settlements there. Unfortunately, Netanyahu's goal means he is happy to abet the lunatics' goal.
