Only one parent would need to stay home and homeschool. In my case, I am already a SAHP and spouse makes the income. I don’t know what OPs situation is, but if there is already a SAHP or one parent make significantly less income, I think homeschool could be a great option when compared to 65k per yr per kid, maybe not through 12th grade, but at least through elementary

To answer your question, I’d have to earn 800k at a minimum (remember it’s MUCH less with taxes! About half) - and even then it’s a big stretch.

But you’re trading off the type of college kid will go to for sure and type of ideas exposed to etc etc. I feel great about the suburban publics but the commute will be detrimental to my life and work. I make 600k and have two kids in public. Would never consider private K-12 unless it offered something specialized my kid really needed.

Op, if you are in NYC you do have options. Out of zone placements are MUCH easier to get post-Covid since many middle class families living in decent zones have left. I’m seeing this particularly in Districts 13 and 15 in Brooklyn though I don’t know where you are.

Op - I guess I should try again. We are in Chelsea. Last year I tried and the older one got zoned for spruce which meant commuting all the way down to Fidi and is in the bottom of a skyscraper. It just felt so wrong for him.

Which magnets are really good for elementary or middle? Other than nest and Anderson (I don’t see that happening). Ds did get into tag when he was 5 but it’s far though I guess we could move

My income is $950 but about $400 of that in stock that doesn’t start to vest till next year. Dh got laid off last year and is still looking. And nyc taxes eat half my take home

Then your DH can homeschool. Seriously, it’s your best option. Even if it ends up being only a year- it buys you more time. Every year you can keep them out of the terrible inner city public school and closer to getting into a public magnet middle/high school, the better.
