How would they be able to occasionally drive when visiting? They aren’t on the policy unless you add them back when they visit.

DO not drop them off the policy. Then they are NOT covered while driving anyone's car or your car while at home. It's illegal to do that. Also, you will pay significantly higher rates if you add them back, as they went a period without any coverage. Simply don't drop them. Not worth it

But, if you take your college student off the policy and they drive your car they will NOT be covered because their legal residence is your house. If they are coming home for a 2 week break then add them on and take them back off when they go back to school.

That is not what they are talking about.

It is a speific rate for college kids who live at least 100 miles away, don't take a car to school, and only drive at home on breaks.

The discount is significant.

When they take the car to school the rates go even higher

it really depends. Both of my kids only paid about $300 more per year to have their car at school, but this was "more than the rate when they were seniors in HS". We saved $1400-1600 while they didn't have cars at school. And both my kids attend schools in areas where "crime is higher and car breakins are a real thing" (City schools).

You are covered for occasional drivers.. Your mom takes the when for a few hours on a long trip. A neighbor borrowed your van to pick something up.
