Luggage-style backpack?

Anonymous
The general category is "travel pack" and the specific form factor (opens like a book) is "clamshell."

Traveling with this kind of pack is the focus of the subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/.

I used to be all about travel packs/one bagging, like 30 years ago, but in (late) middle age I've moved on and returned to more typical luggage. Depending on your preferences, travel packs can be a great way to travel.

PP. Wait sorry. Looked at the picture again. "Clamshell" designs often have more evenly sized sides, so I don't think that would qualify as clamshell.

I was able to bring that and an away carry-on and no one questioned the size of the backpack as a personal item. You can expand it or shrink it with the zippers in case you question about its size. I was skeptical because of the price and it being at target But again can’t say enough good things about it.

Oh wow, thanks for the response! How did you find the quality? There are a lot of reviews on the bags ripping at the seams (but those are the same negative reviews on *every* bag I’ve researched—likely overstuffed?) Also, is it obviously larger than a backpack? I’m worried about it being flagged as too large for personal item.

Osprey has them for about $120
Cotopaxi, if you like bright colors, about twice as expensive
Check REI

Generally called "Travel backpacks". Good recommendations here:

The Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 40 are great deals for the price- under $150. Peak Design 45 is great but pricy at $300. I got it a few years ago on a big sale for $200 and love it. Had one before without a waist belt, and it was brutal on your shoulders after a few minutes. Whatever you buy, make sure it has a waist belt, absolute necessity.

No these aren't personal items. They are a carry-on you put on your back. You get it so you can walk on bumpy surfaces/stairs and keep your hands free.

A good add-on is a small folding backpack like this to store inside and use as a day pack once at your destination.

No. It's the carry-on.

Yes, I have domestically and internationally. My carryon is a roller.

You’ve obviously not done this. I’ve never had an issue with it as my personal item.

No… the one OP posted would be considered a personal item; it fits under the seat.

No, it’s not. The one from Target that OP posted is a backpack and fits under the seat.

How do you fit it under the seat in front of you?

Carefully? It fits. Not sure what to tell you.

Dp here
The one OP linked is too big to be a personal item for the airlines I did a quick search of (Delta, United. Spirit.)
