Downton Abbey movie 3

Yes, you won't know the characters or really get the jokes.

I went and agree that it was a nice finale to the series. It fit in perfectly. You do get to see early teen Sybbie, but it's pretty clear she's still on the kid side rather than the adults.

I also agree you cannot have it in the late 30s, as the family already had a tenuous hold on keeping the castle. There is some downsizing in this movie.

Not weird, but while you might follow the basics of the movie's plot, or you may already know some historical background (general decline of British landed families), you're not going to understand the rich backstories of all the characters.

I mean, there were more than 50 episodes of this show across six seasons, plus two prior movies.

This reddit thread has a little background material, including links some summaries/recaps.

I liked the TV at first but it quickly turned into a bad soap with a stunning setting. Agree maybe second season it dropped off cliff. I still watched it and lamented what could have been. But no interest in the movie when there are better things to watch now.

Do any of you Downton fans feel a little disappointed that it is not set in the mid 1930s, with a side storyline around a teenage Sybbie as a debutant or a young woman pressing against the societal norms?

The Crawley girls will all be middle aged. Episode 1 with late teen/20 something Lady Mary and Lady Edith was set in 1912, so in the 30s those two will be in or approaching their 40s. A teenage Sybbie would add some of the spark of the first seasons to the senior and middle aged Crawley family and staff, especially since even perpetually teenaged Daisy is now a 30 something adult.

Julian Fellowed explained the reason why he chose the early 1930's. He said that he did not want to deal with Germany and Nazis.
