In a similar boat, but my kid wants the PB one. Tough to splurge on something she’ll likely only use a year (if that!).

You mean a Pottery Barn backpack? Why would she only use that a year? My kid has had hers for four years and it's going strong.

Yes. Just concerned that she’ll grow out of the princess phase by 1st grade.

Always LLBean. My backpack from first grade is going strong almost 40 years later.

Just get her the princess backpack!

Another LL Bean true believer. My kid is on year seven with his backpack and it looks as good as new.

My 25 year old 6 ft tall son still uses his first Bean Pack for hikes. Solid blue with his name embroidered.

You’re in charge. Give her two choices of colors of quality backpacks and let her pick. You can let her pick a cute pencil or folder but don’t buy crappy backpacks. What a waste.

Agree. And even if you switch out the cheap backpack every year, you’ll break even with cost if you buy a “quality” one.

Also not sure if it will be a thing when your kid is a senior, by right now the trend is for seniors to buy a backpack with the same theme as their kindergarten one. Your will miss out on this fun if you buy a plain one.

Former K teacher, do not get the little kids backpack. It needs to key hold a folder +. So many show up with tiny backpacks that won't work and parents have e to buy another.

Agree with go with what she wants, backpacks don't cost a fortune, and it's something you'll likely buy each year until they graduate

Went through something similar with my rising kindergartner. Settled on a State Kane backpack with a princess keychain, and a princess backpack.

This, get her a cheap princess backpack and in a few years she can pick another one.

We've always done LL Bean or Pottery Barn backpacks with a fun patch reflecting whatever the child is into that year.

If she outgrows the princess phase last year, you just use a seam ripper to take off the patch and sew something else on!

FWIW my rising second grader and her peers still seem to like princesses

Crate & Kids has really fun designs and they wash really well. We're on year three and it looks good as new.

+1

Yes. Will probably get lost anyways

How would a child lose their backpack? I have a 7th and 9th grader and neither of them has ever lost a backpack. In fact, the 9th grader just got his 3rd backpack ever since the one he doesn't think the one he's been using since 4th is big enough for his laptop, binder, and running gear.
