AITA—paint edition

Both of you need to communicate better. Your choices should be documented whether it’s in contract, email or text.

Either way, I don’t know how much paint was purchased but I wouldn’t be planting a flag over a couple hundred dollars. Save your flag for anything bigger. Tell him you’ll pay the paint, explain exactly how you want things like this handled going forward and move on.

I’d offer to split the cost of the paint 50/50 since it was a misunderstanding between the two of you and I’d tell him he could have the paint.

You asked him his opinion and took the other colors down. You probably even affirmed his choice in someway because you were trying to be polite or passive. Sounds like you are very indecisive and overthink. That probably added to the confusion.

Kind of curious about which paint color he liked vs. which one you liked.

Are you sure he bought it that day? Did he show you the receipt? Maybe he is trying to unload unused paint from another job...

He can return it, no?

The people telling you you're wrong or that you need to preserve the relationship are wrong. This man is clearly not right in the head. He needed to clarify with you, at least verbally, if not in writing, that COLOR X was what you'd chosen. This is basic contractor 101 stuff. If he cuts corners like that, he's not a good contractor.

NO, do not pay for his stuff. And hopefully you haven't paid him for anything yet.

Mixed tinted paint is not returnable.

Right sorry I saw it was tinted. He's dead wrong. OP did not verbally accept his choice, and he's clearly stupid or trying to pull something. I wouldn't pay him for the paint. He should know better.

I’m surprised at everyone siding with the contractor. Are you all this spineless in your own lives or is this just the usual OP bashing?

If you intend to keep using him, tell him he needs to double check with you before buying anything that can't be returned in the future, you'll reimburse him this time, and then be a PITA from now on. Or you could offer to buy all the paint yourself from now on. Either way draw a line in the sand and start calling him on all his tricks.

Agree with PPs that contractors priority is moving things along, I've been presented with random stone trim and things that don't really match my tile, metal handles in colors I don't want, etc all in an effort to move it along. The key is the stuff is returnable if I reject it and if I reject it then I will timely furnish my own.

He absolutely jumped the gun. Anyone with any experience would know to double confirm with you that that was the paint color you wanted. Anyone with any experience knows that you leave samples or chips up on the wall for a couple of days to see how it looks at different times of day. That said, I think you need to eat the color of the paint to keep the peace.

I feel so annoyed by this on your behalf!

When you’re halfway through a project, the contractor really has you by the nards. It’s not a good time to start to play hardball.
