No - one kid did homework at the kitchen table through 8th grade, then transitioned to his room in 9th grade. My younger kid will be in 8th, and he will still be at the kitchen table, maybe forever, because he likes the ambient noise. He had about 60-75 min of homework last year in 7th grade. I have no idea how much my sophomore had last year because he was in his room.
Many elementary school kids are not disciplined enough to sit at their desks for homework on their own. Especially if they are using a laptop or iPad for homework. Also, sometimes kids have questions about homework and they are more likely to ask if you are close at hand. My younger kid has a desk in his room, but he doesn’t use it for homework. Sometimes schools don’t teach kids how to study effectively - outlining, organizing notes, taking notes to begin with, annotating notes, etc, so that is another reason to be close by. |
My kids all transitioned to doing most homework/studying in their own rooms around middle school age. All have desks.
In elementary, it was always at the table or kitchen counter. Occasionally they still do, but usually not. I’d think a desk would be a wise purchase. |
My daughter had a desk, but it was never used for homework. It held art supplies, books, etc and as she got older it turned into skincare and makeup.
Homework is done at the dining room table or on her bed. These kids have little homework on paper. It is mostly on a Chromebook and kids can sit anywhere with it. |
Yes. Our kids have desks in their room. |
They do sometimes. My kids (all girls) have had desks in their rooms for years. As tweens now they are mostly used as vanities. ![]() |
One does homework in bedroom at desk or on bed, or in the family room at night after younger sibling is in bed.
The younger sibling has a desk in the bedroom that's used as a shelf for piles of random stuff and art supplies. Does homework in the kitchen to be around other people. (Can you guess which one has ADHD? haha) |
I always did homework on the floor. My kids rooms are much smaller and they use their desks. |
My kids have several places where they do homework. Our formal dining room since it does not get used daily, the desk in their room, the recliner in their room, the recliner in the family room or their bed. They have never studied on the floor. |
We only have one kid dodo one of our bedrooms is a playroom/homework room/lego room.
There is a table/2 chairs in there. |
Both of my boys used the desk in their room, but it was a "start as you mean to go on" situation. In early elementary school they had teachers who advised setting up a specific homework area and routine early to develop good habits for when homework would eventually matter. |
Mine has a desk to hold school stuff but doesn’t sit there. |
2 kids in college, neither did their work at a desk in their room when in k-12 |
My kids room is too small to have a desk. But we have an amazing desk in a nook near the living room on the main floor which is a big open space so you can see dining room table and kitchen.
My now going into middle school kid always does his homework at the dining room table. He has not used the desk once, but I use it a lot to do bills, etc… It would be nice if he did it at the desk so the dining room table is clear. There is always books and stuff to one side. |
Elder son uses the Queen Anne credenza in the upstairs parlour in the smaller guesthouse. Younger son is a real rascal, and prefers the dressing table in the maids’ quarters. |
I asked my granddaughter that today. She does it in the kitchen or in her room. Her brother does it in his room or his dad’s office. They are very good students and voracious readers. |
