Something like this:

In fairness, if you have a dead mouse it will stop smelling on its own probably in a week. They’re teensy.

I looked everywhere and I took it to the shop today and they can't find anything. the next step is to look behind the dashboard or in the vents at a cost of $4000. The car is older and I'm concerned that they won't find anything. Anyone have this happen? will the smell eventually go away when whatever it is is done decomposing? the mechanic thinks it will stink forever. please help!

LMAO, sounds like you are getting scammed.

Shops will put a dirty cabin air filter with a dead mouse or something in a suspects car and then charge big money to get to it later, talking about how hard it was to get to, etc. Most are just behind the glove box.

I took it in with smell and checked the air filter before I went in. Is the price out of line- maybe. But they didn’t put something in there….

Someone did. Doesn't just happen as vehicles are sealed too tight. Unless you left a window open and parked near a dumpster?

mice can climb in very small (dime sized) holes - something probably came in through the outside.

If you want to hit the odor with the big guns, buy a cheapy ozone generator on Amazon. There are several under $100. Watch plenty of YouTube videos about how to use it safely in a car interior. Ozone is noxious but does a fantastic oxidizing and eliminating smells caused by anything organic.
