Drawbacks: Meridian High School—FCCPS

AP Calc BC is offered but not AB. My child took BC so it wasn’t an issue but if yours wants to take a different Calc course, there isn’t one. (IB math doesn’t map neatly onto American math curriculum, which is one of the reasons Meridian offers AP Calc BC). Our experience was that the IB courses in social science and humanities were good, but math and science courses not so much. My child also had multiple math and science teachers who were terrible (one was fired after a year). This could happen at any school but at a small school where there are only one or two sections of a subject and often just one teacher, the low quality of multiple math/science teachers was a big problem. If your child is interested more in writing and humanities/social science, as mine was, IB can be excellent, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a student very interested in math and science.
