17 year old daughter lost half her hair

Google telogen effluvium. It happens sometimes after a shock to the system, including stress or illness. DD and I both experienced it after getting Covid. The hair shedding slows down over time and the hair does grow back.

Eating disorder? Reaction to medication? Stress? Infection? All causes of telogen effluvium

I had alopecia. Find a good derm and try topicals and steroid shots. Read Reddit for ideas. Crazy as it seems, it doesn’t typically seem to be connected to vitamins or diet or medical issues. You can be healthy and losing hair. Taking iron isn’t a bad idea though.

+1

See dermatologist

DD has similar issue. In our case, the dermatalogist looked at her for less than a minute and had no suggestions.

Get a different one. Mine was very helpful.

Get her checked for inflammation.

Alopecia (there are different types) typically has concentrated spots and the hair loss is a lot cleaner than a diffuse loss pattern. I'll mention that my husband had low iron for a number of months and that caused his hair to diffusely thin so that you could see his scalp (similar to what you're describing). Iron infusions and a steady higher dose of iron pills brought back new growth over a course of about 12 weeks. But, low iron absolutely causes diffuse hair loss. No matter what, I would pursue a strategy to bring her iron up to median levels.

My daughter went through hair loss when she had an implant for birth control. It was hormone-related. Once she got it taken out the hair loss stopped.

Thanks 🙏🏼 everyone sincerely.

I have a question about Iron.
My daughter has a high ferritin (iron stores)
but low iron. Some people say that a high ferritin is all that matters. Which one is it?
Her S-Iron was very low

This happened to me and my DS following an extremely stressful event. Interestingly, with telogen effluvium, the hair loss starts a few months after the stressful event.

Loss of hair was one of Moms symptoms.

What did the doctor say to do next?

My 17 year old daughter has lost half her hair. It is diffuse, meaning that it has shed evenly.

But because 50% is gone we can see her scalp and it’s very thin.

We went for a full check up and she has no deficiencies. Nothing wrong with thyroid or her body etc.

Has this happened to someone you know at this age? What could it be?
Is it common for doctors to miss something here?

Did they check ferritin?

This happened to me as a teenager, and back then the doctors just told me to take B-complex and iron pills. My hair eventually grew back over the next 3 years. I never figured out the reason.

This happened to me with thyroiditis. Had to run full panel. High heart rate? Irritability? Stressed?

She should see a good hair loss dermatologist. Try Dr Anju Pabby in DC. They can tell if she has new growth anywhere. And what to do.
